A list of the apprentices, employees, assistants, and other professionals associated with Thorvaldsen’s workshops.
This list is under development and will be updated periodically.
Categories of employees and types of contracts
The table below presents an alphabetical list of workers of various kinds employed at Thorvaldsen’s workshops. These include modelers, stonecarvers, sculptors, plaster casters, and more; Thorvaldsen’s apprentice sculptors are also included. For more detailed information about the individuals listed, the reader is directed to their biography pages, which can be reached by clicking on the relevant individual’s name.
Beyond the employees named below, Thorvaldsen also engaged day-laborers on a more or less regular basis. These include stonecarvers and stonemasons (hired, for example, to perform rough carving of marble blocks), porters, the so-called servitori di Piazza [valets-de-place], whose precise function is presently unknown, and fe[r]rari [iron workers]. The last refers presumably to a type of blacksmith or dealer in iron tools, who furnished Thorvaldsen’s workshops with such items as hammers, chisels, tongs, files, and compasses—as well as, one may assume, the iron wires used for raising and stabilizing clay models).
In addition, a gardener was attached to the little atrium between the three smaller workshops at Piazza Barberini—sometimes monthly, but at other times on an hourly or daily basis.
