General Comment

The letter has been abbreviated. It is not known by whom or when.

According to Stampe, op.cit., Christian 8. had written the letter dated 7.9.1840 to Thorvaldsen at the suggestion of Christine Stampe. In the letter, Thorvaldsen is asked to stay in Denmark and postpone his approaching journey to Italy. Stampe had understood that the sculptor preferred not to go, but that he needed a royal command in order to convince himself that it was reasonable to remain in Denmark. As this letter shows, Thorvaldsen complied with the King’s request and did not leave for Italy until the following year, 25.5.1841.
