Copenhagen, September 9th 1840
Dear Christina!
I just come from a play and find a letter from the King dated Plön, September 7th in which he says that he wishes to see me at Sorgenfri where he will be October 3rd and will visit Nysoe October 2nd; he hopes to see me at one of these places. He does not want me to travel at this time of the year, so I shall stay here this winter; I write these few lines and ask my dear old Mum to be good […]

The letter has been abbreviated. It is not known by whom or when.
According to Stampe, op.cit., Christian 8. had written the letter dated 7.9.1840 to Thorvaldsen at the suggestion of Christine Stampe. In the letter, Thorvaldsen is asked to stay in Denmark and postpone his approaching journey to Italy. Stampe had understood that the sculptor preferred not to go, but that he needed a royal command in order to convince himself that it was reasonable to remain in Denmark. As this letter shows, Thorvaldsen complied with the King’s request and did not leave for Italy until the following year, 25.5.1841.
