Bertel Thorvaldsen

When and why these lists were made is not completely clear, but they are probably things which were to be bought, packed, or washed during Thorvaldsen’s trip in the summer of 1804.
The lists are strongly marked by Thorvaldsen’s dyslexia, see the related article about “Thorvaldsen’s Spoken and Written Language:/artikler/thorvaldsens-tale-og-skriftsprog.
The last of the lists has been written partly on top of the sketch of Caritas with Three Children, C530r.
The sheet also contains two draft letters to C.F.F. Stanley, see draft of before 27.10.1804, three drafts to Anna Maria Uhden, see draft of probably the middle of July 1804 and a bill for board and lodgings of probably the end of June 1804, probably in Florence.
On the left side of the paper, above the inverted list and partly covered by a draft letter to Uhden, there is a very faint representation of Caritas in pencil. The sketch could be a first draft of the more distinct and detailed sketch on the right side of the paper, Caritas with Three Children, C530r.
The sketches are two of many representations of Caritas by Thorvaldsen during this period. The sketches are probably from Thorvaldsen’s stay in Florence, i.e. June-beginning of July 1804, see the Thorvaldsen-Chronology and the discussion about the date. The Caritas theme may have been taken up later in connection with the execution of Baptismal Font, A555,2, see the related article about the Baptismal Font.
