Comment on Thorvaldsen's Spoken and Written Language

It may justifiably be added that Lange’s judgment largely rests on an analysis of two letters—one dated 8.12.1810, and the other dated 13.3.1811—to the connoisseur and Councillor of State Hans West, as well as one letter dated 7.8.1834 to Thorvaldsen’s friend, the sculptor H. E. Freund. The letter to Freund, moreover, was written by an amanuensis, Ludvig Bødtcher. It is thus not clear whether Lange had, by this point, made acquaintance with a larger selection of Thorvaldsen’s correspondence over and above the letters that Thiele had published in his biographies, I-V, 1851-56.
