Comment on 19.1.1828
Thorvaldsen had, in fact, been informed of the ship’s arrival in fairly good time, cf.:
- Letter dated 22.6.1827 from J.C. Ulrich to Thorvaldsen (send your crates to Leghorn for storage).
- Letter dated 17.9.1827 from C.F. Hansen to Thorvaldsen (the ship will arrive at Leghorn in January).
- Letter dated 9.11.1827 from J.C. Ulrich to Thorvaldsen (the ship is now in Tunis).
- Letter dated 28.11.1827 from J.C. Ulrich to Thorvaldsen (the ship is in quarantine at Leghorn).
So it seems that Thorvaldsen is either prevaricating or only considers himself informed of the ship’s arrival by the last letters to arrive in Rome:
- Letter dated 1.12.1827 from “Building Commission for Christiansborg Palace :/personer/slotsbygningskommissionen to Thorvaldsen.
- Letter dated 4.12.1827 from Johan Gunder Adler to Hermann Ernst Freund.
