Abstract

A comprehensive corrective to a sketch made by Thorvaldsen, probably A617, for the sepulchral relief to Ponińska’s son and daughter. The unhappy mother in the foreground is to cover her eyes with her hands and in denial hold on to her daughter’s veil. The daughter is to hold one hand out towards her brother and to point to the firmament with the other. With a serious countenance, divided between life on earth and Paradise, the son is to hold out one hand towards his sister and the other towards an angel. Both children are to hover above the earth with the angel so that only the mother stands on the ground. The relief is to be of the finest marble and the figures full size. Ponińska wants the plaster cast to be ready within a year and the marble version to be begun while she is in Rome.
