Thorvaldsen is invited by the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm 3. to compete with the sculptor Antonio Canova for the execution of a monument to Queen Luise. Instead, Thorvaldsen passes on the commission to his pupil Christian Daniel Rauch. See Thorvaldsen’s sketch C182r, which may be connected with Luise’s monument.
