Abstract

Dodwell recommends the English sculptor John Gibson to Thorvaldsen. Gibson is to study in Rome for three years, and Dodwell hopes that the young man can receive Thorvaldsen’s expert guidance so that he can benefit as much as possible from his stay.

Prendo la liberta di presentarvi un mio Amico Signor Gibson, il quale desidera molto fare la Vostra conoscenza, e domandare li Vostri valevoli consigli, si come La intenzione di studiare la Scultura per tre anni in Roma;
Vi prego di volerlo ajutare con i Vostri lumi e di istradarlo nella maniera di approffittare del suo soggiorno nella Vostra Roma; vederete che ha un talento straordinario, e l’Inghilterra spera molto in di lui talento.

General Comment

Gibson blev, på trods af anbefalingen her, først elev af Thorvaldsens italienske kollega, billedhuggeren Antonio Canova. Først efter dennes død blev han nærmere knyttet til Thorvaldsen, der da fungerede som mentor og vejleder, jf. Gibsons biografi.
