It appears that Dahl had been promised a post at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden but was not paid for his work there. In Dahl’s wording, one gets the impression that he has mentioned his frustration about this to Thorvaldsen before. Not until 1824 was Dahl given a permanent position as professor extraordinary at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, cf. Bang, op. cit.
