Comment on Thorvaldsen's Collection of Paintings − a Collection with a Significant Lack
On this see the letter from Maria Puggaard, dated to likely during the summer of 1842, which mentions Bolette Puggaard’s bold act:
“In the winter, when the wreath was supposed to be set upon the building, Mother attached a large wreath to it, and had the daring (in our revolutionary age) to hang a tricolor flag atop it. We others tried to deter her with the threat of arrest by the guards, as was the practice of the day; but she promised to defend her flag as if it were for the King himself. Thorvaldsen had introduced freedom in art, she held, and our noblest desire must be that it survives, and that his museum stands free of every tie to the palace or the like.”
