Comment on Thorvaldsen's Works at Hams Hall
The correspondence indicates that four photographs were enclosed. The explanation of the present five photographs must be that one of the original photographs was of The Genii of Music Singing, cf. A586, and The Genii of Music Playing, cf. A588, side by side, as both photographs have clearly been cropped out of a larger picture. This must have been done at the Museum, in order to file each photograph under the appropriate inventory number. No photograph of the work the Museum ended up purchasing, Cupid Revives Psyche, A866, has been located. It is conceivable that the Museum returned this photograph as an additional precaution, in order to ensure that the correct relief be sent.
