Comment on Transportation of Thorvaldsen's Artworks to Copenhagen 1828
These two candelabra in plaster remain unidentified. They are mentioned in the following letter:
- Letter dated 19.1.1828 from Thorvaldsen to the Building Commission for Christiansborg Palace.
The collections of the Academy of Fine Arts include plaster casts of two different sets of Roman candelabra:
- One set is known as Candelabra, now at the Danish National Gallery, inv. no. KAS1606.
- The other set are the so-called Barberini candelabra, in marble at the Vatican Museums, cat. nos. 551 and 547; the plaster casts of these are also at the Danish National Gallery, inv. no. KAS1575.
The two sets of candelabra appear in various drawings and paintings from the Academy of Fine Arts. They flanked Thorvaldsen’s body when he lay in state in the Academy of Fine Arts’ ceremonial hall; cf. Georg Emil Liberts, Thorvaldsen Lying in State, March 29, 1844, D1748.
