Comment on Dying Lion (The Lucerne Lion) - a national-political monument with built-in controversy
On this see also the letter from Rüttimann dated 1.1.1819, which describes Antonio Canova’s lions and certain works from Thorvaldsen’s collection of graphic arts, which—albeit at a much later date—reproduce the funerary monument. These are Raphael Morghen, Monument to Clement XIII, E873, and Paolo Guglielmi’s two reproductions of the lions from that monument, namely, Sleeping Lion from the Monument to Clement XIII, E1109, and The Awake Lion, the Monument to Clement XIII, E1108.
