Comment on Dying Lion (The Lucerne Lion) - a national-political monument with built-in controversy
Cf. Liebenau, op. cit., p. 40. In Thiele III, p. 8, Thiele states that Thorvaldsen had already met Lucas Ahorn during his visit to Lucerne on 12.8.1819. But this cannot be true, if we accept Liebenau’s report of Ahorn’s arrival as reliable. According to Felder, op. cit., pp. 18-19, the carving had not yet begun at this point. Pankraz Eggenschwyler began cutting the rock face on August 19, 1819, and the original models first arrived at approximately the end of October of the same year.
