The Danish merchant Hans Puggaard arrives in Rome with his wife, the painter Bolette Puggaard, and his daughter Marie. Together with a young relative, they spend six months in the city – often in Thorvaldsen’s company.

Marie Puggaard’s diary from the stay in Rome, reproduced in Saabye, op. cit., p. 80-98. The first entry is dated 2.11.1835, and it reveals that the family has already been in Rome for a couple of days.
