Abstract

Thorvaldsen sends Hope the statue of Jason with the Golden Fleece, A822, 25 years after the contract was signed. Out of gratitude for the original commission and to compensate for the long wait he also sends Hope a new portrait bust of Hope’s eldest son Henry Thomas Hope, A825, and the reliefs A Genio Lumen (The Genius of Art and Light), A828, and Cupid Received by Anacreon, Winter, A827.

General Comment

There exists a French translation of this letter draft which, in contents and form, corresponds to the final letter. This final letter is not known today. The correspondence with Hope was conducted in French; see also the letters from Hope to Thorvaldsen dated 6.4.1819 and 3.8.1829.

On 17.9.1917, there was an auction of Thomas Hope’s collections and household effects, and the then director of the museum Mario Krohn (1881-1922) succeeded in buying not only Thorvaldsen’s famed Jason with the Golden Fleece, A822, for the museum, but also the busts of the members of the Hope family (Thomas Hope, A823, Louisa Hope, A824, Henry Thomas Hope, A825 and Adrian John Hope, A826) plus the two reliefs A genio lumen (The Genius of Art and Light), A828, and Cupid Received by Anacreon, Winter, A827.
After the end of the First World War, the works were sent to Denmark in 1920 and placed in the museum. For more about the auction, see Margrethe Floryan, op. cit., p. 62-65.
