Thorvaldsen’s own letters to his mistress Anna Maria Uhden only came into the museum’s possession in 1929 and 1930 respectively from descendents of her and Thorvaldsen’s daughter Elisa Paulsen. So unless he was able to read them at Uhden’s, Thiele did not have any possibility of seeing Thorvaldsen’s replies to her and on the basis of Uhden’s replies only been able to guess how many of the drafts on which he really made a start became letters that were dispatched. Although less likely, this could have helped to fashion Thiele’s unflattering portrait of Thorvaldsen’s lady friend over many years.
