Munchen d. 12.d Nov: 1811.

Munich, November 12th 1811
Dear good Thorvaldsen,
I have been to Secretary Schilling thinking that I could learn something about you; but in vain. – However, I hope that I at Baron Humboldt’s in Vienna shall find a letter. – Hopefully you have received my letter dated Florence 22nd last month: and so, know of my safe arrival there. – And now I inform you that I have likewise arrived here safely November 10th: – As I like descriptions of journeys just as little as travelling I shall briefly tell you everything: that is what has been of most interest to me on my journey. –
The Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, which owns a number of bad and mediocre paintings /: for there as everywhere else the best ones have been carried off :/ incidentally among all this owns an excellent Dominichin depicting two Dominican monks being assaulted by a soldier. There is life, expression, drawing, colour. – In Mantua it is worth seeing Palazzo del T. by Julio Roman, as you know he has painted a lot there, and I shall only mention a room because of its oddity; It is quadrangular with a high arch, the entire room forms a painting or panorama presenting Jupiter’s strife with the giants; The merit of this work is that it astonishes. – It seems that Julio R: has wanted to imitate Michel Ang: has painted enormous figures in daring positions, – pity that they do not always hang together very well; Another room has been painted according to the builder’s whim, thus he has placed a full scale horse above every door /: horses of various races:/ these well drawn: almost ruined by damp: – What is most worth seeing in Verona is an antique amphitheatre, namely Colleceo, a small one, the outside more ruined, the interior restored. –
Every moment I have had different travelling companions, consequently of different kinds. From Trente to Brixen I travelled with a Cavlr. G: a sharp thinking person, he was much devoted to me – he told me many things to characterize our present time – he thought as your dear friend! And others who do not let themselves be blinded – he gave me a letter for an Italian who is employed here – Ch: Wg: he who is a very ingenious and thinking person said: I do regret R’s fate, its total destruction is unavoidable – Pr: will suffer no rival. – I know that some time ago an amount of powder was discovered in W – . The intention was that this palace was to be blown up.
So he told me who has helped bring the powder away from here. – The painter B. in Florence has told the same person that in P. they would not at all have him say – / I that it was not better for C:/ W: K: from M: is occupied by being R: – thus a certain ageing G: Cell: nel: has learnt that there in Bosen is a young country girl who owns two millions after her parents. – He who wants to marry her uses all means – her relatives are against the match, however no one doubts that he will succeed. – Enough of such things. The journey in Tirol – that is from Brixen to Innsbruck has pleased me, it is a very rich and well-cultivated country. The people do not at all look like Germans; these are beautiful, merry, natural people. – For a long time, I have not seen so many beautiful girls as here – and cannot understand why our friend Cock has settled for a dry stick. – More some other time. –
I do so long for a letter from you, my dear Thorvaldsen, to learn about your health. I ask you to give my regards where you find them suitable – Malling – Limpriegt etc: –- If you will be so kind as to write to me later would you please address the letter to Mathei’s father in Dresden. – Take care, my true friend and love yours affectionate
