Florence, September 22nd 1811
My dear Thorvaldsen,
We have all safely arrived in Florence the 21st and have not had any mishaps worth mentioning; I have been very content with my travelling companions; We have all been displeased with our coachman ; For his horses were fine and he himself was a donkey; several times we had to help his horses so that we would not remain on the road. Because of the coachman’s negligence Stiler’s servant lost his parcel with clothes and what Stiler took most to heart was that on this journey he himself has lost a black velvet cap which he had had made in Rome after a drawing taken after a painting :/ thus to look like some famous painter; In few words you here have all my description of the journey and if I were to tell you more of it this would be water as it has rained incessantly for the last couple of days. I intend to use the first opportunity to get on – and hopefully you will get a letter from me from Munich. I sincerely ask you to write to me, addressing the letter to Schilling in Munich, to Humboldt in Vienna – Do what you can to comfort your friend; Now every day I get further away from Rome, But my esteem and devotion to you will never become distant, so I always hope what I wish: that we meet again. Give my kind regards to Malling and Limpright – you know where my regards are suitable and that I have not taken leave where I ought to, for I wish never to take leave of anybody. Take care! Take care! And love your sincere friend –
