Abstract

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts instructs Thorvaldsen on the terms of his travelling grant. He is to go to Italy, reside predominantly in Rome, and report every six months to the Academy. After two years, he is to send a sample of his marble-carving work and continue to do so every year as long as he is abroad.

Sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, who from 1st July this year enjoys the travelling fellowship of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts of 400 rix-dollar annually at first for three years, in order to acquire more perfection in his art in Italy and particularly in Rome, is obliged to inform the Academy about his place of sojourn every six months after his departure, and after having enjoyed two years of scholarship to send proof of his progress in working in marble, or a plaster cast of a work in marble, which he has executed during this time in Rome, and in the future to send proofs of his progress in the abovementioned way every year he might still stay abroad.

  1. I.e. at first for three years. Usually, history painters, sculptors, and architects travelled for six years. See F. Meldahl & P. Johansen: Det kongelige Akademi for skjønne Kunster, 1700-1904, Copenhagen 1904, supplement XXV (Regulations of 21.6.1771). However, in July 1790, the King had approved a proposal from Abildgaard to the effect that the period was reduced to three years and only extended to four, five, or six years, “when the student abroad, through unusual talents combined with unceasing diligence, gave reason to hope that he would attain a high degree of perfection in his art”, ibid., p. 105.
