Underdanigst Pro MemoriaI!

Rom d: 8e. August 1832.

Underdanigst
Albert Thorvaldsen
Etatsraad, Commandeur af Dan-
nebrog etc.

Oversættelse af dokument

Most humbly Pro Memoria,

Occupying myself with giving my financial matters a precise and ultimate decision in case of my death I humbly take the liberty to send the enclosed two written documents to the high chancellery. In one of them I have written a most humble application for an adoption of my daughter Elisa Sophia Charlotte born out of wedlock so that she as a legitimate child may carry my name, – and as I besides have no relative I hope to reassure me for a most gracious concession to this my most humble application.
From the other enclosed letter containing an accurate copy of the legal testamentary disposition made in Rome by me on my fortune the high chancellery will learn my decision to donate to Copenhagen my collected art objects from many years, in this way to be able to establish a museum for the promotion of Art and Scientific Spirit in Denmark.
Even though I do not doubt the legality for me to draw up such a disposition, the importance of the matter enjoins me to submit it to the high chancellery to learn, if there is more I must comply with, and if not, whether I may be granted the receipt of a most gracious confirmation of the decision about my fortune, stipulated in the abovementioned will.

Rome, August 8th 1832

Most humbly,
Albert Thorvaldsen
Titular Councillor of State,
Commander of the Order of
the Dannebrog, etc.

Commentaries

  1. Latin for “in remembrance”, used to recall oneself to somebody. The expression was originally a polite introduction in letters to persons of a higher rank, often civil servants. Gradually it was also used more generally in letters to or from officials, often written in one word. The expression appears frequently in the more formal letters in the Archive.
