On the other hand, Brun’s claims about a different chronological issue were refuted effectively by Thiele, namely, the question of how long it had taken Thorvaldsen to produce the bas-relief that won the Academy of Fine Arts’ small gold medal. Brun had claimed this was a mere four hours, but Thiele rightly countered this by distinguishing between Thorvaldsen’s first, hasty sketch and the bas-relief itself, which took several months to model.
