Thiele II, p. 430. According to Thorvaldsen’s valet C. F. Wilckens, Thorvaldsen himself had confirmed to Adam Oehlenschläger this rejection of duty in favour of his freedom, but in this version the rejection of marriage is far more conscious: “[…] you [Oehlenschläger] know me very well, and you know that in order to retain my freedom I have not wanted to marry.
