Comment on March 1827

[Author’s note in the text:]
When Lord B––– sate for Thorwaltzen, some circumstances which may justify this idea occurred. He appeared the first day in his atelier without any previous notice, wrapped up in his mantle, and with a look which was intended to impress upon the artist a powerful sentiment of his character. It was the first introduction; and Thorwaltzen, from whom I heard the fact, admitted that the effect was commensurate with his wishes. I regret to find few traces of it in his work. See the Portraits of Westall and Philipps, and Dallas’s Commentary on them.
