Comment on Venus Priapus
In semiotics, an “index” is one of three types of signs defined by the American philosopher, logician, and mathematician Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914):
- An icon is a sign that represents its signified by means of likeness.
- A symbol is a conventional sign, like a punctuation mark or traffic sign.
- An index is a sign that represents by means of contiguity or cause-and-effect, such as a footprint, a hole, or a discharged bullet, or—as in this case—semen after ejaculation.
