Comment on Jason and the Hope Commission
Schadow, op. cit. p. 70, repeats the tale of Hope’s having appeared just before Thorvaldsen was set to depart Rome; but he provides neither precise dates nor further details about the sculptor’s planned departure. Schadow had arrived in Rome only in 1810, and therefore did not witness the events at issue directly. He did, however, know Thorvaldsen well, as they both resided at Casa Buti; so he can in principle have heard the story directly from Thorvaldsen himself.
