Copenhagen, January 24th 1816
The given opportunity I take to greet my dear Thorvaldsen. They flatter me and say I can greet you in our native country. Nothing would please me more than seeing you happily here; Your welfare is always of concern to me, in any case I console myself by your wisdom and knowledge of the world, whether you for a short or a long period of time or forever would decide to leave the dear Rome. The fire of Moscow shook the earth and transformed the world. An old sentence says: It is a most happy country, which has a wise prince no matter whether he is good or bad; About our King it is said: He is like a father tender hearted and does not lack personal courage. About the Prince: He lost a crown and took a wife. About someone else it is said: He tears down and builds and secures himself. People who are always happy are: the charlatan who always laughs, and parrots with red plumes. – You will kindly ask how I am? I can answer nothing but: Lund, who as you predicted, again went to Rome although the works he made here are not so good as what he did in Rome; Whereas I who lack protection and have delivered works I am not ashamed of am put off with beautiful promises, four years I have been home, 10 years ago I was promised work; However, I am in good health, I have got accustomed to patience, and forget the world by working; That in my restricted position I have been able to support my sisters is the only happiness, which I enjoy since my homecoming. – Müller has married and settled down, Raben is well. – the engraving of your beautiful triumph I wish I wish you well!!! Yours affectionate

[In the margin:] NB I am always reminded of the missing 70 Scudi for the widow Madam Wahl, the proved two orders were at last paid to me by means of a notarial act.
