Abstract

On behalf of his client, Luigi Sommariva, Dôrhel presses Thorvaldsen for the remaining part of the frieze Alexander the Great’s Entry into Babylon, cf. A505, which was commissioned by Giovanni Battista Sommariva for his Villa Carlotta on Lake Como. He also inquires about the statue of Chloë, commissioned from Hermann Ernst Freund, which has not arrived.

Il Sig^re Conte Cav^e Luigi Sommariva^I il quale si trova qua p Sistemare i soui affari, mi ha incaricato di porle i suoi distinti ossequi, dirle di avere trovato al Lago di Como^II d[e]i circa i due Terzi del fregio del rispettabile di lei lavoro del Trionfo di Alessandro^III, e che gia da più di un anno il defunto suo Genitore^IV li aveva letto che nel mese di A.S. 1825, sarebbe stato collocato nella stanza, gia fatta di nuovo. Non avendo avuto alcuna lettera da VS. Illma. dopo la morte del suo Genitore accuduta il 6. Genno: pass^V, bramerebbe Sapere, cosa sia stato del restante di questo fregio, acciò possa darle le sue Ist[r]uzioni.
La prega in oltre d’Intendere dal di lei allievo Sig^re. Freund^VI, cosa sia stato della statua da sui fatta – L’Eloe^VII, che gia suppone fatta da alcune Memorie ritrovate del Genitore, la quali dicono = essere stata spedita =, ed essendo partito da Milano il P^mo. del corrente, non era giunta, e non aveva ricevuto alcuno avviso.

Brevet omhandler Thorvaldsens marmorversion af frisen Alexander den Stores indtog i Babylon, som Giovanni Battista Sommariva havde bestilt hos Thorvaldsen nytåret 1817-1818, jf. Thorvaldsen-kronologien.

Frisen findes i dag i Villa Carlotta ved Comosøen i Italien; en gipsafstøbning af frisen til Sommariva findes i Thorvaldsens Museums samling, A505 (dog let varieret i forhold til Sommarivas version).
