[...] We were much delighted with the lake of Como and we turned our boat to the Villa SommarivaI which contains many works of modern artists, painters and sculptors. The Triumph of AlexanderII in marble by Thorvaldsen is here but lost for a want of light. Sculpture loses all its form and expression when there is a want of good light. [...]
