To the King!

Your Majesty, I cannot let these days pass without humbly expressing my heartfelt congratulations to His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and his admirable consort, with whom I had the pleasure to converse in Streeliz. This union will certainly be a blessing and fortunate for our country, which is what every good Dane wishes.

Most humbly I give my thanks for all the favours I have enjoyed from Your Majesty during my stay in my native country, they will remain a sacred memory. –

I beg you most humbly to recommend me with the best wishes to Her Majesty the Queen. –

Your Majesty’s

most humble
Albert Thorvaldsen

  1. Thorvaldsen was on his way from Copenhagen to Rome, cf. the article The Journey to Rome, May-September 1841, with a week’s stay at Maxener Schloss at Maxen, cf. the Thorvaldsen Chronology 13.6. – 21.6.1841.

  2. The Danish crown prince Frederik (7.)

  3. The German princess Caroline Charlotte Mariane von Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

  4. Dvs. “samtale”, se også artiklen Thorvaldsens tale- og skriftsprog.

  5. I.e.the German town of Strelitz in Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

  6. Frederik and Caroline Charlotte Mariane von Mecklenburg-Strelitz were married 10.6.1841.

  7. Christian 8. supported the preservation and the strengthening of the United Monarchy, i.e. the united Danish monarchy including the Kingdom of Denmark and the German Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. The Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was in Northern Germany and could therefore in theory – through the marriage between Frederik (7.) and Caroline Charlotte Mariane von Mecklenburg-Strelitz – be more closely connected to the United Monarchy.

  8. The Danish queen Caroline Amalie.
