I received with true pleasure the high Commission’s favour

Having has the honour to receive a letter from the high Building Commission for Christiansborg Palace as well as one from H.R.M. Prince Christian and Konferenceråd Hansen I also received with true pleasure the Commission’s your flattering favour of November 28th last year. The first two letters I have had the honour to answer by the last post which has been mailed from here and now I take the liberty with these few lines to thank the Commission for your friendly attention and favourable opinion about my works which are to serve as ornamentation of the Church of Our Lady and I only wish that these works could might deserve to stand in this beautiful building, I also write to Mr Hansen, the konferenceråd, regarding the other works for the Church of Our Lady to get to know the opinion of this excellent artist before I begin the work
Those of my works, which are finished and may go be sent from here to Leghorn in two months, are Christ and twelve Apostles in plaster, the two Carytids in marble for the throne chamber at Christiansborg Palace, His R.H. Prince Christian’s and his wife’s busts in marble, a baptismal font also in marble and which I give to a church in Iceland.
I shall see to packing up and dispatching for Leghorn as well as possible, as for the costs I cannot decide. The Commission may give instructions to our consul Mr Rider Chiaveri to pay what are expenses for my work, they are 200 Scudi for each Apostel and 300 Scudi for Christ, if I get this money which I have laid out I shall be completely satisfied and only wish to be able to contribute something for the ornamentation of my dear, native country and remain in this thought respectfully, the Commission’s

obedient servant

General Comment

Draft of the letter dated 12.2.1827, which is fully annotated.
The growing number of errors in the draft may indicate that Thorvaldsen has copied from an original written by an amanuensis and occasionally added his own ideas and mistakes to the text. This reverse procedure might suggest that some correspondents were entitled to letters written in Thorvaldsen’s own hand in order to emphasize his seriousness and goodwill.

Commentaries

  1. The word is probably either ikke [not] or akka, but the meaning is uncertain; in the latter case it could mean like the academy, i.e. the same salutation as was used in letters to the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. However, this is most likely a simple trial of a pen.
See a similar fragment in the draft letter to J.L. Lund dated 6.8.1804.

  2. This double construction with the commission’s and your suggests that Thorvaldsen has copied from the original of an amanuensis, cf. the general comment.

  3. Dvs. vide i betydningen kende.

  4. Antagelig kort for Deres Kongelige Højhed.

  5. Dvs. sir = pynt, pryd, jf. Ordbog over det danske Sprog.
