Hr.

Baron de Schubart, Your Excellency,

I have had the pleasure to receive your favour of the 6th and get it the 13th this month from Baron Brown. I cannot thank Your Excellency sufficiently for the very important favour you have been so good to show me by sending me a bill of 100 Roman Scudi, which Baron Brown has taken upon himself to attend to and after which he has been so kind as to pay me 20 Roman Scudi yesterday. By this I have been helped out of my difficulty, for which I sincerely thank Your Excellency, and I must thank you all the more since you who are in difficulties yourself because of the sad times for our dear Denmark, so readily have shown me this fatherly favour, I shall certainly never cease to show my gratitude.

The troubles our dear, native country has had to suffer so undeserved by the disastrous was have been sensitive to anybody high and low, but thank Heaven that increasingly there are hope and prospects of an amicable and beneficent peace. It is very comforting, then the fruits of a happy peace will be enjoyed twofold, after we have been freed from the heavy burdens of war.

Our estimable Thorvaldsen sends his regards to Your Excellency, he is applying the finishing touches to the beautiful bas-relief for your late consort’s monument, which to me seems to be one of the most successful works produced by his master hand.

Captain von Huth and Malling send their regards, they want themselves to have the honour to write to Your Excellency next mail day.

For some time I have been occupied with making studies after the most beautiful of the many excellent picturesque objects of which there is such a great wealth in Rome and particularly of the antique monuments. I wanted to provide myself as much as possible with studies of all sorts of objects, for which there is ample opportunity here. From several possible compositions I have begun to carry out two. The one is taken from Ovid and represents Cecrops’ daughters opening the basket and discovering Minerva’s secret and the other Ulysses who is fighting with the suitors, but I now have to leave these things until some day I can afford to pay the models for them, as will be necessary for their execution.

Finally, I wish Your Excellency may ever enjoy good health and well-being, and again repeat my deepest thanks for the kindness you have shown me by helping me out of my difficulty.
