Comment on Jason and the Hope Commission
For a sense of how much correspondence went missing in the mails of the day, see the list of Letters Lost, which catalogues the letters that are no longer extant today. Beyond these, there are undoubtedly numerous other lost letters of which no records remain of their being posted. Nevertheless, this should not be taken as implying that Thorvaldsen actually did attempt to mail Hope any letters prior to 1819.
