Thorvaldsen had been ill since 1803, and his stay at Schubart’s country house Montenero near Leghorn was therefore primarily intended as a period of convalescence for him. See the related article about Thorvaldsen’s Illness 1803-04. Thorvaldsen had been staying there since the middle of July 1804.
