Comment on Thorvaldsen's Collection of Paintings − a Collection with a Significant Lack

However, a letter dated October 30, 1808 from Høyer to Herman Schubart (Manuscript Department, The Royal Library, NKS 2337-2o) documents that during his stay in Rome, Høyer completed numerous compositions by Ossian. This could be one of them, and the painting could have been left as a gift to Thorvaldsen between 1805 and 1811, when he left Rome again; cf. Arkkatalog, THM.
