Ernst Jonas Bencard, op. cit., has argued that a characteristic feature of Thorvaldsen’s artistic practice is that he often “played with,” transformed, cut loose, toned down, marginalized, or switched the typical attributes of classical figure types, destabilizing their conventional use and giving rise to new meanings. Bencard’s discovery of Thorvaldsen’s “discreet shifting of attributes” provides an important theoretical basis for the present article.
