It is not known whether this actually happened, or whether it was just a white lie. Thiele II, p. 54 suggests the latter because Thorvaldsen did not want to accept the commission mentioned in Schubart’s letter. The commission – a sketch for a war monument for the United States – came to nothing as far as Thorvaldsen was concerned, see more about this in 14.2.1806.
