Jan 25th 1840 [...] visited the studio of Thorwaldsen by far the greatest modern sculptor (poetic) I have ever seen – his works are grand and possess the advantage of perfect study of the antiques, his group for a pediment of St John preaching is magnificent and his colossal Christ and Apostles for Copenhagen beyond my powers of expression, also his frieze of the triumph of Alexander much delighted me.
