P.M.

Informing the high Building Commission for Christiansborg Palace that I am fully occupied with the works commissioned from me for the royal palace I now take the liberty following professor Hansen’s remark that he will never be in trouble to place either statues, groups or bas-reliefs in such a large building, he only wished to have some works from my hands – And convinced that the high Building Commission wants my works for the ornamentation of the palace I take the liberty to point out: that although in Rome you more easily than in other places have capable people to help in the mechanical work it takes a long time to execute the work in marble and as furthermore my other commissions keep me occupied I think I should rather recommend to the high Building Commission: some of my works which I have executed at my own expense, namely some figures which are suitable for each cabinet and are as follows. A standing Psyche opening the vase she was to bring to Venus; a Venus in her right hand holding the apple she had received from Paris, with her left hand reaching for her clothes; and a group representing Cupid and Psyche; the mentioned are all of the most beautifully white marble you could wish, and as for the work I indulge in being satisfied with it and can let you have these works at the subjoined prices –
If the high Building Commission should approve of my wish I most humbly ask the high Building Commission as soon as possible to please inform me of your esteemed answer, as I expecting this promise not to make any decision about the above mentioned until I regarding this have received the high Building Commission’s information – I commend myself

Commentaries

  1. I.e. Pro Memoria – Latin for “in remembrance”, used to recall oneself to somebody. The expression was originally a polite introduction in letters to persons of a higher rank, often civil servants. Gradually it was also used more generally in letters to or from officials, often written in one word. The expression appears frequently in the more formal letters in the Archive.
