The sa

Your dear letter of November 2nd I received so late that I could not fulfil my obligation to answer it the same day but wrote November 22nd a letter to a letter the mail day after that which I can see Your Excellency has not

Your dear letter of November 2nd I received so late that I could not fulfil my obligation to answer it the day the same day, I wrote to Your Excellency the mail day after that which I see from this letter of November 26th that you have still not received

Your dear letter of November 2nd I received with great pleasure but also with so late a pleasure I have that I was not able to fulfil my duty and obligation to answer it the same day. I wrote to you the next mail day after that, and I see from Your Excellency’s kind letter to me of November 26th that you have still not received my letter

General Comment

These three short drafts are written on the same sheet as two other drafts, probably of the same letter, see 30.11.1804 and 7.12.1804. The original text of this sheet is a bill of 22.11.1804 from Thorvaldsen’s landlord, Camillo Buti.

Regarding the connection between these three drafts, the bill, and some pencil sketches, see the general comment on the draft of 7.12.1804.

Commentaries

  1. I.e. letter of 2.11.1804 from Schubart to Thorvaldsen.

  2. Dvs. sildig, sent, se Ordbog over det danske Sprog.

  3. The following mail day must have been at the beginning of November.
Schubart’s letter of 2.11.1804 must have reached Thorvaldsen c. 5-8.11.1804 as letters usually took between two and six days to go from Leghorn to Rome, see Mail Processing Time.

  4. i.e. Schubart’s letter of 26.11.1804.

  7. Dvs. Excellence.

  8. Dvs. til mig.
