Document

Nysøe d. 17 Oct:
1840.

Nysoe, October 17th 1840.

Your letter, dear Andersen, is much too despondent, you must certainly not leave Denmark in this mood. Come now nicely out here into the country first, so that we may try to placate you. You paint everything in black colours, etc. – – come out here and I shall tell you, what the King said about you, he asked about you, before we had sung your song, or before he had seen it; verbally I must also thank you, and at the Lundbyegaard there is now a rather beautiful girl who is very keen on making your acquaintance. You are almost in the same mood as Henry, in a letter I received from him today as well as your letter; however, Elisa does not seem to be melancholy for this reason, such as he is, However, it may be that perhaps you could travel out here together and who knows if Jette W would not keep you company, as you are coming, and if her brother Peter has arrived, then do take him with you, in the meantime take care and do come soon.
Christine

You must think of something for November 19th, either a short play or such, which we could perform here, I won’t say for whom, as he will add a couple of words to this letter and the name will catch his eye; –
If you have time, will you see Miss Schwarzen and ask her if she can come out here soon as we miss some music. Take care. –

[added in Thorvaldsen’s hand]

Take care of yourself, good friend, be comfortable and see to it that you get out of the troubles. I shall probably see you here, before you leave, if not, then we shall meet in Rome

Albert Thorvaldsen

[continued in Christine Stampe’s hand]

Now I start again, Thorvaldsen asks you to tell Konferensråd Collin that he does not at all remember how old his daughter’s son is, the first one was born a year after the daughter’s wedding, and the other (who is now deceased) some 18 months later. He then asks you to give his regards to the Konferensråd, and from yours
sincerely,
Chr Stampe
