By this Thorvaldsen means that he would not been able to get as interesting assignments in Copenhagen as he had the possibility of getting in Rome. He is referring to the commissions from e.g. Countess Vorontsova, the Baptismal Font for Brahetrolleborg kirke, Thomas Hope and others.
In other words, he is saying that the presence in Rome of art-lovers with purchasing power made the return to Denmark professionally uninteresting.
