Comment on The country bumpkin and the donkey-rider in the service of art and freedom

The drawing in question is Mary with Jesus and John, NysøG. The drawing was presumably given in 1818 to the Scotswoman Frances Mackenzie, Thorvaldsen’s then lover; after his somewhat unbecoming break with her, she sent it back to him. Many years later, on Christmas in 1841, the sculptor presented the painting to his friend, the Danish baroness Christine Stampe, cf. Rigmor Stampe (ed.): Baronesse Stampes Erindringer om Thorvaldsen, Copenhagen 1912, p. 161.
