Abildgaard’s slightly patronizing remark is probably aimed at his colleagues, the professors of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1801, they were: Johannes Wiedewelt, C.F. Stanley, and Andreas Weidenhaupt, who were all born in the 1730s and only barely survived as sculptors mostly by producing sepulchral monuments.
