The Redesign of the Museum Basement 2001-2007

The following considerations were crucial to the project: The need to solve a series of unfortunate climatic conditions, including a high degree of humidity in the air; the ambition to replace the exhibitions – now over 30 years old – with new ones; the desire for a greater degree of authenticity in the appearance of the historical building. The concept of authenticity was understood both in relation to the architect Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll’s interpretation and the changes which the building has undergone since the Museum was opened in 1848 (including the alterations of 1923-26 and 1966-73). The architects Alexander H. Damsbo and Henrik Ingemann Nielsen have designed a new range of exhibition furniture in addition to the copper elements in the now exposed window shafts. The new exhibition area is intended to introduce Thorvaldsen through some of his personal belongings and documents, to present a selection of works from his time at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and his early years in Rome, to show a series of his plaster models for the major commissioned works, and to exemplify Thorvaldsen’s copying methods, his restorative tasks and his loans and inspirations from a series of works in the canon of the antiquity. The idea is to retain the new exhibitions for 8-10 years. The newly designed museum equipment will, it is to be hoped, have more years to look forward to.
